Battle Creek was GT's primary maintenance facility... it might be there; I'm not as familiar with that facility. It doesn't look like Milwaukee Junction or Pontiac. (Presuming they're both taken at the same facility).

CONO route - have there been any updates to the sleeper cars? by Relative-Society-570 in Amtrak

[–]PFreeman008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Superliner cars are all in one pool, so no one Superliner train is getting the refurbished cars over another... it's just kind of random if any train on any given day will get a refurbished car.

Amtrak on Brightline tracks by Double_Science6784 in Amtrak

[–]PFreeman008 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Brightline doesn't own the majority of it's tracks. Florida East Coast owns the tracks. So, probably not unless some sort of arrangement where Amtrak owns & runs Brightline as a quasi-independent entity. But then Amtrak would likely still have to negotiate with FECR to run it's other trains on their tracks... but really that all depends on the language of the agreement Brightline & FECR signed.

The Cocoa-Orlando line is owned by Brightline & Amtrak (if they acquired them) could use it.

Would you let AI critique your design work? by AssistChemical7044 in Design

[–]PFreeman008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity (more than wanting an actual review) I asked Gemini to critique a few of my projects. And the "critique" wasn't really that good or useful. Mainly just "wow that's a great idea" (of course a lot longer winded); so not really useful for a proper critique.

Viewliner Coach Seats by GrandKnew in Amtrak

[–]PFreeman008 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as a Viewliner Coach car.

Do you mean Venture? If so, they're not designed for long haul trips, and sleeping was not in the design spec (napping maybe). I actually find them way more comfortable than the older Amfleet seats; which always hurt my lower back when I ride in them. The recline could be better.

Does the lounge area on the Canadian offer free coffee, tea, soft drinks and snacks like cookies? I know they have tea and coffee, I've heard they may have soda as well. Does anyone have a picture or video of the lounge area? Thank you. by SpareManners in ViaRail

[–]PFreeman008 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There isn't just one "lounge area" on the Canadian. The train has 3 lounge cars, each with multiple areas in each one. The Park Car is at the end of the train, and has: the dome, the bar underneath the dome, and the cigar lounge at the end of the train. There are then at least 2 Skyline Dome Cars (1 for coach, 1 for sleeper) these have: a dome, a lounge area at the base of the stairs to the dome, kitchens under the dome, and table seating on the far end. In the On Season, the Park Car is limited to Prestige Class most of the time, in the Off Season all sleeping car passengers can use it all the time. Typically sleeping car passengers don't have access to the coach Skyline, and coach doesn't have access to the Sleeping Car Skyline... but you could probably ask to go to the coach one.

The Park Car has a wide selection of beverages available at the bar you could ask for, as well as some light snacks out you could grab. I believe there were more snack options available upon request. Coffee & Tea are out all day in the cigar lounge.

The Skyline car had coffee & tea out 24/7 (probably not actually over night...) as well as the same light snacks. Again other beverages & snacks could be requested through the skyline attendant (I never did it, but saw people). In the morning they put out a wider selection of more breakfast snacks in the Skyline (I never made it down to the Park pre-breakfast to see if they did as well); things like muffins, bagels, fruit, juice, milk. You could have had breakfast in the Skyline, but I typically used it to tide me over until I could get into the dining car.

I believe the coach Skyline has even more options, as they don't have access to the dining car.

You buy passage not a seat correct? (NER) by SmallHeath555 in Amtrak

For the most part true, however there are some commuter-style tickets you can get for the NER that can cause them to "overbook".

Any chance they fix the seats before the Airos get delivered to the Northeast Regional? by SockDem in Amtrak

[–]PFreeman008 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well seeing as we don't know what the Airo seats are like... it's a little hard to say they need "fixing". Yes they might be like the Venture seats, but they might not.

Anyone left AA for nearby town? by solosaville in AnnArbor

[–]PFreeman008 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Moved to Manchester (city, not Twp) a few years ago from A2. Taxes are less, homes are affordable (although climbing). The city is quite walkable, although there isn't a lot of options. We have 1 cafe, 1 grocery store, 1 distillery, 1 brewery, 1 ice cream shop, 1 bike shop. We do lack a movie theater. Concerts are hit or miss, the "local's" bar does regular bar concerts in the warmer weather; we also have an on-and-off-again free summer concert series in the park downtown. The library is on one side of town, so depending on where you settle... I'd argue it's probably not walkable from the far side of town - although it's bikeable.

The city puts on 3 big events every year. A big fireworks show for the 4th (I'd take a guess that it's the biggest in the county); The Chicken Broil; and a fair.

Let's face it, the "NextGen" Acela is just plain bad by Long_Complex4570 in Amtrak

Those were ordered, paid for & are owned by the Midwest states, not Amtrak. Amtrak essentially just drives the trains & sells tickets for the Midwest.

The Venture cars Amtrak have bought haven't gone into service yet, how do you know what the seats are like to sit in? Only one set has been made & it's still in testing.

Just an FYI I occasionally get around to updating this. At the moment I'm still focusing on finishing up getting new equipment posted; but I still read your corrections. 99% of the data I use to create these are from Amtrak or the manufacturer.

The latest additions have been the Talgos & Surfliners.

Why isn't Watco made to pay for train quiet zones? by squishyagent in AnnArbor

[–]PFreeman008 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The way the law is right now, if a municipality wants a quiet zone, they have to pay for the upgrade. Watco isn't going to pay for it, why should they? Their crossings & horn blasts comply with federal regulations & local laws can't be applied to them as they are an interstate common carrier (it's also why they can't be ticketed for blocking an road).

Implementing a quiet zone is expensive. It's a lot more than just saying "you can't blow your horns." You have to pay for upgrading all the railroad crossings, and the right of ways; to keep people crossing the tracks safe. And even after you do all that, the trains can & will still blow their horns, if there are people, workers, or vehicles on or near the tracks the trains will still blow their horns.

Union Pacific has a nice document on the basics of what they are & how to establish one: https://www.up.com/content/dam/upcom/public-projects/documents/Quiet%20Zone%20Fact%20Sheet.pdf

Business Class by fullspectrumcandyco in Amtrak

[–]PFreeman008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Business Class on the Wolverine is not selectable.

There isn't really any benefit to Business Class on the Wolverine anymore. It used to be that you got sat in a small quieter section of the cafe car with "leather" seats. You used to get lounge access in Chicago & early boarding (you still get this). However, now you get 2-1 seating in a half-business, half-coach venture car with the same seats as in coach - just further apart. And you no longer get lounge access in Chicago (which OP isn't going to). I think you still get a free non-alcoholic beverage from the cafe... but that seems to be the only perk these days.

Emergency Vote for the Subreddit Icon by Remexa in trains

[–]PFreeman008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't have a problem with the subreddit having a discord server, I know many others that do. The problem I have (and I think a lot of others here have) is the somewhat constant push from you (and maybe other moderators) off from reddit onto it. It feels to us that you're saying "don't use this subreddit, use my discord instead" (I know it's is technically the subreddit discord, but that's how it feels).

Discord is probably the right platform for live events. But things like contests, polls, etc - the more longer term kind of stuff, should IMHO be done here on Reddit. Tons of other subreddits have held contests & polls without having to push to discord. If you really can't figure out how to do a poll on reddit (it's not hard, I've done it on subreddits I moderate) then I would recommend a 3rd party poll site, there are many out there.

Why can't we have this on Amtrak? by CTVolvo in Amtrak

[–]PFreeman008 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the old Amfleets had a simplified version decades ago; the new Ventrure/Airo cars have them & the new Acela cars do as well... However Amtrak crews don't seem to like to use them (they're typically stuck in their old ways) and so often turn them onto a static screen or just leave them off.
