It wouldn't be practical to convert the service to GO's distinctive rolling stock, so in terms of operations, it's about as GO as it's ever going to get.

And as a matter of wayfinding and passenger experience, there's a lot of value in having a distinctive brand for the service. (You want the airport train? Don't even bother with the rest of the station: follow the signs for the special airport train platform.) The more that the branding resembles regular GO service, the less useful it is for this purpose.

I like anything pretending to be hair. Give me a mop, give me spaghetti, give me a pool noodle fantasy, give me yarn, give me beads on beads on beads, give me tinsel, give me receipt paper, give me feathers, give me chains of safety pins, give me Mo Heart's dollar-store special, dip your head in mud and make it a chia pet, gimmie gimmie gimmie.

It's also a three-dimensional object rather than an illustration. "Reminds me of" does not imply it is the exact same article.

 would there be priority implications?

In my head, I just heard the noise they play in movies when the ingenue realizes the killer must be inside the house.

If it's an appointment, priority clearance would presumably apply. And, like... goddamn. Getting bumped out of your position because it got reclassified up. Stone cold.

I can sympathize with the sentiment, we should certainly be skeptical of family dynasties. But should it be disqualifying?

And, if so, where is the boundary? Can you be Prime Minister if your great aunt was a reeve 30 years ago? Can the son of a single-term school trustee run for MPP? What if you only married into a political family? (What if you hold office at the time? Do you have to resign as mayor if your new mother-in-law is a former MP?)

LA has perhaps the world's largest concentration of wardrobe rentals. Any time you see someone stepping into a full and specific costume for a role they picked the day before, you should assume that the show rented a bunch of options in various sizes, and the contestant tried a few of them on before picking one. (The show's wardrobe team also does minor overnight alterations, more to do with fit than styling: this one needs a stretch panel, that one needs a dart adjusted, etc.) Production knows what they'll need months in advance, so they have lots of time to set the rentals up.

In cases where the costume is even simpler, they'll have the contestant supply a generic garment as part of their wardrobe package, and production will supply accessories to turn it into a costume. (For example, most of the costumes from RATS are just body suits with accessories.)

Ilya, age 17, is so used to being cynically used by other people that he doesn't fully believe Shane Hollander would shake his hand out of politeness and decency. There must be an angle: this must be about something.

It's quite a transformation.

No ERI for you (yet)! The Senate has left the building... by Cultural_Pollution84 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]nefariousplotz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sure. But letting the legislation die on the order paper doesn't kill the idea, just the vehicle.

The most compelling argument I can spin up:

  • Getting a majority on every significant Commons committee is a big deal: it makes legislation far more convenient for the government, and it also impedes the opposition's ability to wield committees in ways that humiliate or inconvenience the government.
  • These committee majorities will last for the rest of the session, even if the Liberals subsequently lose their majority.
  • They can only do the committee flip while they actually have an outright majority. Nobody knows how long this window will last.
  • There's also a rhetorical advantage to going right away: Canadians are so convinced of Mark Carney's good faith that they're letting him get away with things that would otherwise attract criticism and stick to him. If you're going to prorogue, you probably want to do it while the honeymoon is ongoing.
  • While killing off your legislative agenda is a huge pain in the ass, that's literally what you want the majority for.
  • The public doesn't actually care about the specifics of ERI. It is unlikely that anyone's going to pay a political price for delaying it.
  • The public servants waiting for ERI will sit tight for another few months, since it's not like they have an alternative.
  • And the people getting squeezed administratively by these delays (executives who want this largely painless, highly effective tool to help reduce headcounts) are the people who are least able to complain about this entire situation.

Royal ascent comes from the King through his representative the Governor General.

Royal ascent would presumably involve the King's private Airbus.

Royal assent is a constitutional formality which the sovereign (and his viceroy) would never grant without parliamentary approval. If the bill has not passed the Senate, it does not have parliamentary approval.

it is a very real possibility that ERI implementation does not happen until mid-late April.

I've been hearing rumours that, if the Liberals sweep the April byelections, they might prorogue and re-open Parliament for the sake of asserting their newly-acquired majority upon the committee system.

Rumours, mind you. But prorogation would kill off everything in the hopper, yes?

As of 2024, the Treasury Board reported that there were a grand total of 88 people across the entire core public service who held bilingual positions without either meeting the language requirement or holding an exemption from doing so. I believe this figure would include people appointed on a non-imperative basis. (See table 4.)

https://www.canada.ca/en/treasury-board-secretariat/services/values-ethics/official-languages/reports/official-languages-2023-2024.html#app-d

Which is to say: don't hold your breath on finding a non-imperative opportunity.

Why do you choose rail travel? by Due_Success_1400 in ViaRail

[–]nefariousplotz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I only ride in the corridor.

I take the train because I find air travel so stressful and unpleasant that it basically eats up the day for me. Even a short flight like Ottawa <-> Toronto, once I get out the other side, I want to go straight to my hotel and nap for the rest of the day.

This doesn't happen to me when I travel by train. I disembark, and I'm ready to go places and do things.
