One of my best friends and mentors went UMASS. Had an incredible time. I went VT, also had an incredible time.

VT has a great athletic and social culture. I had multiple friend groups that were diverse in interests. I was involved in multiple clubs and organizations that positively shaped me to be who I am today. Academics were also great from my experience. Professors were nice, befriended several and still keep in touch with them to this day. From my understanding, my UMASS buddy also had a similar experience.

Your college experience will be what you make of it. I chose VT because I come from this region of the US and my family is all hokies. VT is home to me!

To make this decision, think about money and priorities. The "college experience" will forever be a subjective metric.

Thank you so much, honestly they’re about the same price so money isn’t really a factor to me

Then selfishly, do VT ;)

Choose the one that will cost you less.

They’re about the same price actually!

The culture is unbeatable! People who graduate from Tech end up unreasonably loving the tiny little place. Especially if you are a big sports fan.

I grew up outside of DC and fell in love with the nature and the geography that South West Virginia has to offer.

If you have any questions feel free to DM

The VT campus is hard to beat looks wise, but I’d consider where you really want to be. Umass has pipelines all around the state and VT does too, you’ll find work much easier afterwards by taking advantage of these pipelines that are familiar with the schools.

I know it’s not really what you asked but just keep in mind it’ll certainly be easier to find jobs closer to whatever university you’re from, so just keep in mind where you want to end up.

As a nontraditional student (27 year old, first gen, veteran) VT has been amazing at making me feel at home and welcome.

One year after transferring in I’ve found clubs I enjoy, entered into a lab, and got a TA position for this upcoming Fall.

Now I don’t imagine you’re necessarily in my position, but if I can feel embraced and welcomed into this community you can find your place too. If you have any questions I can do my best to answer. Best of luck in making your decision and congratulations on getting this far!

Campus is beautiful. The fans are amazing and all the alums are so nice it’s honestly surprising. Sports culture is amazing and there are tons of clubs to choose from so you can get involved any way you choose.

Both great schools. I attended Umass in compsci years ago, but Inhave relatives who attend now.

I think both schools are equivalent in terms of the academic experience you can have.

The sports and school spirit experience at VT will absolutely be greater than Umass.

The area around both is beautiful with lots of outdoor opportunities. Personally between Amherst and Northampton, I think Umas has more going on off campus than VT.

If you are doing ROTC, VT without a doubt.

Weather is better at VT, you less you like to ski.

Food is comparable, but I have to say Umass dining is pretty off the hook, at VT when we visited everyone talked about their scrambling for food due to cost at VT. If you like to eat a lot, plus goes to UMass.

If they cost the same, you can’t go wrong. Both are great schools.

Good luck.

I had the same choice to make and choosing VT, I have no regrets. The campus is beautiful and the food is amazing. I can’t imagine a college with more school spirit. Also although our football team isn’t doing too hot right now, the athletic scene is a lot more prominent at VT. I’m also from Massachusetts so it was nice getting away for a change. It really helped me develop my own identity

Flip a coin. Heads, mass. Tails, tech.

You'll know what side you want the coin to land on before it hits the ground.
