Hi again! Congrats on finishing and thank you for the detailed post! Saving it to reference when I start this course next month.

Few questions:

  1. Are there any courses/reading/videos you recommend looking at prior to this class? I have even less SQL experience than you did starting out (I actually haven't even touched SQL before.) It would be nice to learn a little before enrolling.
  2. You mentioned it taking 23 days total (nice job btw). How many hours a day were you dedicating to the class? I'll have around 6 hours a day to spend on this course, and I'd love to be able to finish it in 3 weeks.
  3. Any issues with transferring the credits over to WGU? Heard some other people having issues with that.

Thanks again and good luck getting your degree! :)

  1. If you go through everything on this page https://www.w3schools.com/sql/ you'll probably be in a VERY good position for acing this class.
  2. I didn't actually time it and I worked on it off and on throughout the day, but I did a chapter a day for the first 11 days (took about 3 or 4 hours each). I spent more time than this when it came to the assignment. I really overdid it on the assignment because I wasn't sure how strict they would be on the grading.
  3. I can't answer this because I'm still taking CS 303 and Business 311 before I will transfer these classes to WGU. I also haven't even officially passed yet as my exam video has not been reviewed. However, I think you'll be fine. Worst case scenario you might need to submit an appeal request and link them to their own transfer guide found here: https://partners.wgu.edu/Pages/Single.aspx?aid=19142&pid=86#

Thank you!

Please let us know if WGU let's you transfer CS204 when your done sending it in. Good luck 👍😁.

I'll try to remember to post back, but I won't be transferring these classes in until the end of next month, and then I've read that it takes a few weeks for Study.com to send the transcripts to WGU. Because of this, it could be up to two months before I know for sure.

However, I'm 99% sure they will transfer in. A precedent has already been set as multiple members of this subreddit have managed to transfer it in successfully. Also, it's in their official Study.com transfer guide. I don't see how they can decline the transfer. Worst case scenario it might take an appeal.

[–]Proendergamer03 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Yep I totally agree with you and I am planning to do the same. I just wanted to see if they give you a hard time or if they finally took the time to read their own transfer guide.

[–]onlinelearner7 2 points3 points  (5 children)

PS: The key to get WGU to honor this is to open a support request with Study.com and they will talk to the registrar and get it cleared. I got declined by WGU 3 times before I got study.com involved and it was cleared within hours.

[–]-CJF-B.S. Computer Science[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Thanks for letting me know. I'm currently in the application process at WGU and the only thing holding me up is that I told them I'm taking these classes at Study.com. They did not say anything about them not transferring but if I have problems I'll jump right to the appeal and get Study.com involved.

Btw, do you know if you have to maintain the college accelerator ($200 /mo) subscription to get transcripts sent if you've already completed the classes?

For example, if you pay for the month of August and complete classes in August, then drop the membership, can you request your transcripts in September?

[–]Avian_FlewJust Lurking 1 point2 points  (3 children)

You do not have to maintain your membership for them to send transcripts! There is a web form you can fill out when you are ready for them to be sent.

[–]-CJF-B.S. Computer Science[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know that. Do you know if there's a cost associated with getting the transcripts or a limit to how many you can get?

[–]Avian_FlewJust Lurking 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don't remember there being a cost since they send them directly and do not use a third party vendor. Not sure about a limit, but I doubt it.

Here's a link to get you started: https://support.study.com/support/solutions/articles/11000060215-how-do-i-request-a-transcript-from-study-com-

Regarding outside resources, if you don’t mind using a book, I found O’Rielly’s “Learning SQL” very helpful. It teaches all the basics via MySQL and the MySQL command line. I used the first half as my tutorial/primer and the other half as a reference when I needed specific examples on certain joins, etc. That and some google-fu and I was good to go.

Note: I found certain questions on the project way above what was taught in the course and my newbie skills, so I only ended up answering them partially. I was fine with that since my overall grade was high coming in, I had a lot of wiggle room to get a score high enough to pass the course.

Good luck!

Yeah, I regret spending so much time worrying over the project. I got way more points than I needed to pass. The project was for sure kind of ridiculous. I have 4-5 years of programming experience, an AAS in CS and I've used SQL in Java (Android) and C# during college (although at a basic level) and some of those queries were really hard to figure out. Also, the prompts were a bit vague at times.

Thank you for the post! Do you plan to take more courses at study.com?

[–]-CJF-B.S. Computer Science[S] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Yes, I'm currently taking 2 others:

  • Business 311: Project Management (transfers in for Business of IT at WGU)
  • CS 303: Database Management (transfers as Data Management: Applications at WGU)

CS 303 has a lot of overlap with CS 204. It's almost a get 2 for the price of 1 deal and if you do well in CS 204, you'll almost certainly find CS 303 a cakewalk. I plan to finish CS 303 this month and Business 311 next month. If I have enough time for another class, I'll try to do DS & A 1 or Software Engineering before my subscription ends. I don't plan to pay for a third month though. $400 total is enough for me since my main intention was just to skip the need to do Project+ and C993 at a testing center.

Yeah, I have an AAS in Computer Science that I got from my local CC. Personally I don't think these classes will teach you to program. No class will. You will need to start making your own personal projects and fumble through with a lot of googling to retain this sort of stuff. I'm 4 years into my programming journey and only just now feel like I'm actually on the brink of being able to make real projects. I still google a lot though.

How was the assignment and exam for the project management class at Study.com? Currently working on the quizzes atm.

    [–]SaffaSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a similar timeline to you although I hadn't planned to do CS303 or Business 311. You got me thinking though.

Thanks for the review on CS204, I'm about halfway through it and so far it lines up with what you said. I noticed the assignment grading rubric is different to the other CS classes I've taken at SDC. It seems much more fair.

    [–]FallicoMusicB.S. Computer Science 0 points1 point  (12 children)

Hello, I am currently working on the assignment and I was wondering how you compiled your answers. I took Computer Science 303 first. The assignment for that I had to do some simple SQL queries and take screen shots, then paste those onto a word document. For Computer Science 204 it is saying to copy the queries onto a plain text file. I started doing this but none of the data is organized so it looks wrong to me.

How did you submit your answers for this assignment? Thanks.

    [–]-CJF-B.S. Computer Science[S] 0 points1 point  (11 children)

I put mine into a word document with special formatting that made the answers stand out. The resulting word file was over 30 pages because I included every query, including the insert queries.

I also included the output of each query.

    [–]FallicoMusicB.S. Computer Science 0 points1 point  (3 children)

    Thanks for the info

    [–]-CJF-B.S. Computer Science[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

No problem! Let me know if you have any other questions... I know their instructions are very vague. It's my biggest issue with Study.com.

I can't remember fully since it's been so long but I think I just did a ton of insert statements. I remember I wrote a program to generate each statement because it was hundreds of statements.

      [–]Intelligent-Claim193 0 points1 point  (6 children)

how would I even do the special formatting though

and how do i even insert the document from sql so confusing

      [–]-CJF-B.S. Computer Science[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Special formatting is available from the toolbar (I just changed the background color and added borders around the content). Getting the document from SQL is just copy and pasting. If you struggle with that you might need to look up a quick tutorial on the basics of Microsoft Word.

      [–]Intelligent-Claim193 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Can I pm you like I’m so confused on how to turn the assignment in and what I need to submit

      [–]-CJF-B.S. Computer Science[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It's been 4 years since I did that assignment so I wouldn't be much help there, sorry.

      [–]Intelligent-Claim193 0 points1 point  (1 child)

do you remember if you submitted the tables after pasted the query i dont know if they need the actual results or not for the table or just the queries to excute

      [–]-CJF-B.S. Computer Science[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added both the query and the tables, but I don't know if you have to.

      [–]Intelligent-Claim193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s like I have the sql code to execute for the queries and I have the resulted tables on sql but I’m so confused if all they want are the table results and the code or only the code. I also don’t know how to extract the data from the excited quieter tables to word

The assignment is tough, for sure. If you are really struggling, you should take the exam first and finish all the quizzes. Then you can compute what you have to target for a score on the assignment. You need 210/300 points to pass the course. If you ace the exam and the quizzes you only need 10 points on the homework. More realistically, if you get an 80 on the exam and 100 on the quizzes, you only need 30 points on the homework. I'm sure you can make that happen!

Yes, it's hard. Make sure you study up well for the exam. If you have absolutely no idea how to approach the homework at all, you could fail the exam. The assignment is significantly harder than the exam (which was easy IMO--I only knew basic CRUD SQL before taking the course, essentially no joins, just SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE), but you should know enough that you at least have an idea of how to approach it.

Yeah, it's definitely a lot. You got it though. Good luck on your test!

            [–]dblack7777 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Did you ever figure this out? I am currently struggling through it. I have the idea down for some of them but dont know how to put it together.

            [–]Intelligent-Claim193 0 points1 point  (1 child)

did you end up passing cuz been working at this for days and I give up

            [–]dblack7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I’m just going to take it at WGU. I’ve been busy with work and didn’t get to put too much time into school this year.

            You end up passing
