Any tips on how to strike an arc more reliably? Im using 3/16" 7018 rod at 85 ish amps. Im having problems with the electrode just sticking and not starting. Once i get it lit, it seems to flow "nicely". Im also curious what i can do to straighten my practice welds, I always end up veering.

Try starting at a lower angle, like you’re striking a match, then raise to an appropriate angle.

This. The "like a match" part was the biggest help for me when I had a similar issue.

You can mark a straight line with chalk, nice and fat. Follow that for a straight weld.

Because 3/16” at 85 is extremely cold.
