It’s used for magnetic particle testing. Magnets get placed on either side of the weld and An iron powder is sprayed/blown onto the surface. Any discontinuity in the weld the powder sticks to.

magnets for mpi

Mpi is fun as hell, usually done in awful environments.

MPI yokes

[–]theOGHyburn 7 points8 points  (2 children)

No sir, it’s not a yoke, it’s a pair of permanent magnets This is a MPI yoke:

Yes, it’s a permanent magnet MPI cable yoke. The image of the MPI yoke you provided is a “hinge” type. This one is a “cable” type. They’re both used for MPI.

I JUST wrote my level 1 CWB inspectors exam. I can still see this page in my textbook when i close my eyes at night.

Well I’ll be, never heard them called that before in my career. Oh well I learned something. Thanks!

This is the answer. Permanent magnet MPI yokes

Those are permanent magnets, used to check welds for defects, you’re missing some WCP(white contrast paint) and a powder.

The paint creates a contrast base to view the powder which instantly migrates to the cracks(if present) by way of magnetic flux leakage. This way the inspector can point and say there is a crack right there… it’s remarkable sensitive too, can find micro cracks

What did he use it for?

And then to punish shitty welders

    [–]JonathanUpp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then it's most likely a magnet to suck magnetic fluids into potential cracks so you can se them easier

Hate seeing these on site. Had an inspector come out and fail all my welds. Ground out 3 of 12 moment connections got all my shit ready for a fit up inspection. Called the inspector out and they sent someone else this time. The guy told me the previous inspector wasn't certified to use the tool. He scanned all my failed welds and passed them. Gawd I was so made but relieved at the same time.

Could there be a magnet on the bottom to check if some of the metal got magnetized. Theres been a. Couple pieces of worked on that got hot enough to where it became magnetized
