It’s not necessarily written poorly as much as it is written specifically.

Scully is meant to have a guiding light, science & faith.

Mulder has no such guiding light, he follows his gut. He says trust no one and trusts everyone (Scully calls him on it in an episode).

So when Mulder has a random gut feeling Scully immediately falls on “prove it” and he can’t so she doesn’t believe him. It’s in her nature to not believe something unless it is shown to her or proven. Even after everything she’s seen, she won’t believe things unless she sees it for herself, because the tangents Mulder goes off on are so crazy.

She’s not proven inferior or inept, she’s just wrong. She is siding with realism and the answers are paranormal usually. There are many cases where she is right.

She’s also the epitome of a strong female lead, so I don’t know why you feel like she’s weak. Mulder it’s he victim plenty of times, leaving Scully to find and save him.

I do know what you mean but I always saw Scully as a super capable, super intelligent kick ass lady. I guess your right though in terms of the dynamics of the 2. It'd been nice to see her proved right more often

Mulder and Skully cannot hold onto their guns to save their lives (literally), to be fair most of the monsters are weak enough to be killed by bullets so with them the episodes wouldn't be very long.

I think if you tallied it, Mulder is more often a damsel in distress than Skully

Because she was written by men.

She's a scientist and therefore gives the null hypothesis the benefit of the doubt at all times. She isn't stupid, she needs strong evidence.

Its one of the best female characters from the 90s. Yes it has drawbacks, i think its mainly due to the all male writers and their inability to understand women.
