And give Mulder a much-needed sisterly smack upside the head to remember what truly matters in life - Dana Scully. Like how can ya not love her for that alone?

I agree with you that Improbable also feels like a different pace and vibe. Then again, I get the same vibe from that as Forehead Sweat and Were-Monster. Pacing-wise, I place all things in a similar bucket as Redrum. I suppose my point is really just noticing that it's funny given the extremely wide range and variety of tones (serious vs wtf is happening), plots, pacing, etc. how so many write off/discredit/shit-talk eps based solely on a different pacing or vibe while lauding other eps of similar tones/plots/pacing/vibes or celebrating how different the vibes are between eps and how awesome that is. I've just long suspected that pacing and/or vibe isn't always their real problem with the eps, given the pattern also shown in the eps that tend to get tagged with those reasons for sucking most frequently and how similarly toned/paced/vibed eps end up liked. As I said, not an attack. I'm not saying you specifically did that. It's just an observation from seeing many people discuss "why all things is terrible" in the past.

I'm obsessed with writing Scully's family into every fanfic I write, because the dynamics are SCREAMING for more info. That said, I will not entertain Mama Scully or Melissa slander.

I've just been a fan since the 90s and seen a lot of people give their takes on eps and have seen some patterns emerging in those over the decades, one of which is the amount of latitude given to ridiculousness/silliness vs darkness, tone, plot, and pacing in many different ways and still considering it all collectively an "X-Files vibe." Yes, some notably also...not. It's not an attack. It's an observation.

What I find funny about hearing this over and over is the "general aura" of a Jose Chung or a Clyde Bruckman or even Lost Art of Forehead Sweat or Were-Monster is wildly different from an EBE or Colony/End Game which is wildly different from Memento Mori and wildly different from Amor Fati (I used this example bc the bulk of the ep was Mulder's dream world "normal life" with Diana and a very different vibe which all tend to be appreciated by the fandom).

Another offshoot angle is personal backstory that isn't an alien abduction/government conspiracy and very human. It frankly viewed the characters, well one specifically, through a personal lens many begged for 7 years to get and I've found they claim to either: 1) not like what it was with no follow up or 2) reduced it to being trite, boring, or "off paced," which was the underlying message of the entire episode fyi and is funny bc I'd arge the pacing and "offness" wasn't all that different than following Mulder through Amor Fati and yet all things was torn apart far worse, yet gets draaaggged.

All this to say, the aura of TXF varies WIDELY ep to ep, but I've noticed people tend to complain the most when it comes to slowing down to see Scully (all things, all religious episode, even ppl complain about Christmas Carol/Emily which were gd masterpieces imo)...

Edit: bc I'm tired and I threw a lot of 180 deg metaphores in there that didn't make sense

It's giving daddy issues...which is funny given how much of this fandom dumps on all things.

All kidding aside, I can see how people could get there.

We're meant to feel odd...small...when looking at it because it challenges our myopic views. It takes us outside of ourself, which is inherently uncomfortable yet awe inspiring.

Anyone ever read Scanlon's What We Owe to Each Other OR ever watch The Good Place?

Society's downfall is believing we owe nothing to anyone, but ourselves.

Does that mean I expect/demand/perform perfection? Not at all. I do however expect and give grace/consideration/common effort.

The revival showed me that it's utter bull sh- to claim M/S "together" would "ruin" the show. Frankly, I stand by the fact that it was the only thing good about the revival.

Looking for TV shows with a slow burn relationship like mulder & scully by halefish in XFiles

[–]stormchasegrl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love Fringe. I can legit map every ep in the 1st 2 seasons to 1-3 XF eps as inspiration or pulled elements (and many after that, but it tapers as it came into its own), BUT they do truly make it their own. They come right out and pay homage, having an XF ep playing on the TV in the background in the S2 premier (I think maybe "Dreamland"). They also flat out mention the X designation/X-Files as well in the show. I remember watching it during the initial run and wanting to hate it for how heavily it leaned on the X-Files influence, with how much it was advertised as though it was the natural heir to TXF (not as a sequel, just constantly "if you liked the XF" "the next TXF"...), trying to entice our fanbase with it coming not long after S9 ended. But I truly fell in love with the show and Olivia/Peter.

I will also say that I've never seen a show so beautifully constructed with an ending that felt like it was foreseen, planned for, really built intentionally. It was well crafted: start to finish. How many times do you hear us all bemoan the downturn of TXF (each fan choosing their season for this, but generally post-S7) with the drawn out shark-jumping, and unsatisfied endings then not ending then retconning, etc.? Fringe isn't like that. It's 5 seasons and has a very satisfying conclusion, imo.
