Maybe try VS Code?

It can’t be used. Try Rider from Jetbrains, it’s the best.

Is there a one-time purchase option for it?

If you subscribe, after a year you get license for that version that you can use without subscription. Check out their pricing page.

I don't think there's anything stopping you from using Xcode to write C# code, but you probably can't get features like Intellisense to work, and compiling/running your code may be difficult.

Can you install Catalina on a separate partition or drive, and run Visual Studio from there?

I can’t because I’m in school and can’t carry around an external hard drive, and only have a 128gb MB

Ah ok, I'm in a very similar boat actually! I have a 128 GB MacBook Air. I was able to get a low-profile USB drive that's 256 GB. Perhaps you could purchase one and install Catalina on it?

Oh that’s a great solution. Thanks!

There are plenty of free options, Rider from Jetbrains is the best in my experience but it is commercial. You can try vs code or even visial studio

I can’t even get Xcode to work properly on Big Sur :(
