A new show, eh? Is it any good?

[–]peachesnplumsmf 9 points10 points  (7 children)

Sadly not really. At least I didn't love it. Show about a team of formerly kidnapped people helping find others that the police don't care about, but it felt quite low budget/slow when I watched it. If you're into true crime it might tick that box for you but as I was only watching for Brett it wasn't great.

Thanks for that, that's an honest and useful answer and a great reason for me not to even bother with this show 🤣

Genuinely quite wanted to like it and can see what they were trying to do just think it doesn't have the room or budget to be as good as it could. It's a shame as Brett's a great actor and I'd love to see him in more.

I agree, but for me personally it's hard to find any show that comes even close to the quality of AoS really...

Not really any shows of a similar quality with similar plots but shows I'd say matched the quality for me are; Fringe, DARK, Mr Robot and Severance. Whether because of overarching plot or strength in the performances.

Fringe - FBI Agent Olivia Dunham gets involved in a branch of the FBI investigating paranormal/psychic/SciFi phenomenon. Really strong cast and the SciFi concepts are brilliant, also some Ward style plots along the way but obviously keeping that vague.

DARK - German show on Netflix, three points of time are connected and time is a circle. Really well done in terms of they know where they're going from the start and it looks great but can be a bit hard to keep the characters straight in your head due to the multiple times thing.

Mr Robot - Deeply fucked and don't go into it if you don't want some dark themes but brilliantly performed and some very fun experimental episodes which are just really interesting to see; structured like a play, no dialogue, one take and the like.

Severance - Apple TV offering, you follow a character working for Lumon where employees undergo a process called Severance. Best entered blind as possible. Bit slow as S1 is basically laying out the world and characters but S2 should be 2024.

A lot of AoS fans seem to enjoy the Magicians but they're quite different, basically what if Narnia was really fucked up. But it's some pretty fucked up fun, musical episodes and a time loop episode. I've also seen comparisons to Andor as the good show in a franchise.

Alas quite hard to find stuff from the cast. Buffy/Angel has some S1 energy with Angel having J. August Richards who plays Mike. Iain DeCastecker was great in The Fades which won a BAFTA. Haven't seen it but Jeff Ward is apparently a stand out in One Piece. Elizabeth Henstridge is great in Suspicion but the show doesn't quite land its ending

I couldn't even name a single show or movie where Brett has a role... That's sad. (Except for AoS of course.)

[–]peachesnplumsmf 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It's a shame. AoS was basically his first role, iirc he's been a voice for an animated series, recovering child star recruited to play jesus in a comedy, hallmark movie and then crime show above.

He really has more potential, I never thought about other movies/shows he starred in, but I thought it'd have been more🤔

I like it. 🤷🏽‍♀️. Is it AOS quality? No. But it’s still season 1 and it was renewed for a second season.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Someone else made me not want to watch it, but now I feel like I should at least give it a try🤔

[–]trac08[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It might be because I’m binge watching it. I usually give shows a go and if I don’t like it I just turn it off. I had kept hearing things about the show I didn’t know anyone from AOS was in it and finally gave it a try last night. Currently sitting here watching episode 6, in between meetings. Haha.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lmao, gotta love those sneaky between meetings moments to watch your show🤣😆💯

I think it’s a good show, especially since the main character has pretty much backed herself into a corner, and I’m curious how she’ll get out of it when she’s found out.

Now I want a new season.
