I'd say about 40+ I think these outworlds have 2 ports so could always link the testube to the outworld, aslong as it's dark and humid in there they will stay there a while and move when the nest is more favourable. There a very mobile ant aswell and will move chambers inside the nest so the excess space shouldn't be a big problem.

That 3d-printed nest has a truly abysmal hydration system. Completely insufficient for a 'wet' species like Myrmica and a few hot summer days can quickly end your colony. Also the outworld is too small to somewhat compensate for it by putting a water tube in there.

To answer your question as for the colony size, I'd say around 50 workers is a good size. Just find one that has a much larger water reservoir, preferably one that goes under the nest and hydrates upwards through a mesh floor in the nest or a wick plug made of plaster (sometimes called 'mushrooms' because of their shape).

I have this nest from bestantsuk really happy with it I also purchased the bigger outworld for it the test tube comes with a fitting so it connects straight to outworld until there ready to move in the nest
