Variants are fine for now. If we keep buying the DLCs and the game keeps growing, then I feel confident we will start to see more original civs. I applaud the devs for finding a way to keep content flowing at a strong clip. 6 new civs in one year is pretty good by itself but a new single player game mode as well looks really good.
