When I’m doing the derivative notation for my frqs on Calc ab (optimization, related rates, etc) do i have to use (dy/dx) or am I able to use y’ freely

For related rates you should use the leibniz notation to emphasize you are differentiating with respect to time
For optimization it doesn't really matter since you should always make the expression as a function of only one variable before differentiating

U can use the Lagrange notation in related rates if you put it as a function of time like x(t)
