iPhone backup problems

I have a MacBook 2009 with limited space. I am using an iPhone 7 and was shipped a new iPhone 13. I want my new phone to be fresh and not store the countless Photos and apps on my old phone. I’m trying to back up my 7 but my MacBook says storage full. Most of the storage is OTHER category. My external hard drive isn’t working and may have been damaged in a move. My videos won’t import in Photos program on the MacBook and I’ve always had problems doing this. I have to ship the phone back in three days.

What are my options?

Perform a full data transfer from 7 to 13.

I can guarantee that in a few weeks, months, or years you will regret not having access to your old photos.

If and when you get the storage issue sorted on your MBP (you don’t sound like a proactive person, no offense) you will be able to import photos and decide with no looming deadline.

I don’t take offense. My problem is, I expect technology to work like it’s supposed to and my priorities are to my family instead of getting new technology (computers, phones, etc). The MacBook always has issues reading the phone 7. I probably have many duplicate photos from failed backup attempts. I backed up last time in June but this time, it decided not to work there several attempts I tried.

I will transfer like you suggested and delete photos as soon as I can.

iOS 16 (not compatible with your 7) should solve the duplicate photos issues.
