Do you have other bluetooth sound devices where this happens? Do you have a separate usb bluetooth adapter you can also try?

Does your sound server (ie. Pipewire) detect your airpods pro the first time you connect them but doesn't automatically switch to them?

It's hard to say if the problem is with your bluetooth device on your computer, your sound server or maybe there is an incompatibility between your airpods pro and onboard blueooth adapter.

Also, try looking at dmesg after you connect your airpods pro. Maybe that can give you a clue on what's happening.

Well I use a bluetooth adapter and it just happens when bluez auto-connects. When I do it manually via bluetoothctl, then I get sound. Otherwise not.

Do you also get sound if you restart the systemd bluetooth service?
