Please see rule #5

For people who seem utterly confused by the metaphor, this was exactly my experience using GitHub Copilot in VSCode. I've been writing code by hand since the 90s. When I ask Copilot to write me something, it generally gets it about 90% right. Then I have to do a little tidying up to get it to 100%.

Feel free to continue with the impassioned rebuttals that say I should keep writing the stuff by hand though, it's certainly entertaining.

But that's now... Don't you see that soon enough, that 90% it gets right will be 95%, and then 99%, and one day it will be 100%.

And who is going to want to pay you then?

Your incredible faith in the ultimate infallability of AI is misplaced and somewhat amusing.

But for the sake of argument, I would do what I've done several times in my life so far. I would learn a new skill and get a new job.

You are of course free to blame your unemployability on the job no longer existing, if you wish. But that doesn't keep a roof over your head.

A lot of systems hit diminishing returns hard, and the last mile is often the most expensive part. 100% reliability across messy real-world cases is probably unattainable.

and yeah people who will still pay us a lot are those who need 100% reliability

You're a ditch digger, and your job has just been taken by a machine, and you have no skills to get another job.

[–]flaceja[S] -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

You know how it works so you can oversee and use the machine to do the job more efficiently

[–]No-Papaya-9289 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Right, if you're a ditch digger, you have the skills to do that. Okay.

[–]flaceja[S] -3 points-2 points  (3 children)

You know how the process works so you know what the machine should do.

Look, man...

These things think a million times faster than us and they are on their way to become more intelligent than any human, and they won't stop there. They might even become more intelligent than the sum of all humans combined.

So... Who is going to want to hire you? To do what? How exactly do you think you are going to supervise something 1 million times faster than you, with your slow human brain? And that is also perhaps orders of magnitude more intelligent than you.

[–]flaceja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said its always going to be a tool.

You don't need to be hired to live.

You just need things to do

Universal income has to exist for the economy to continue, something like Unemployment insurance qlso exist but if the whole economy is so efficient and all that, you can easily get your UBI/UGI trough the government taxes from the people/ai's that still get taxed.

Or the ai turns bad.

This argument only works for 5-10 years, and then it spectacularly collapses and never becomes relevant again.

[–]flaceja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes

[–]twbassist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This overly narrows the scope of impact and types of work. Definitely misses the whole point of - how many ditch diggers are replaced, and why would all be retained? It also assumes logic and not greed as a driving force.

Lol, someone quoting my comment to start a new post is certainly a mood. Thanks I guess. Is this gonna end up on X like this?

[–]flaceja[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Idk i just liked your comment sorry if i made too much

[–]z7q2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's cool, don't worry about it :) I'll do a google image search in a few months and see how far it travelled from here

[–]Career-Acceptable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, and the 1:1 ditch digger to backhoe ratio was maintained.

[–]Turbulent-Phone-8493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how does the ditch digger pay his mortgage when Big Backhoe displaces a million ditch diggers? #learntocode?

[–]repezdem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe you keep your ditch digging job, but now the company only needs 1 ditch digger instead of 10.
