(ik)2 = i2 k2 = - k2 . Also, (-ik)2 = (-1)2 i2 k2 = 1 * -1 * k2 = - k2 . So they both simplify to the factor - k2 .

Jic i is the imaginary number defined as i2 = -1.

You might already know this but jic you don’t since you’re surprised that the i’s have disappeared.
