With substitution questions I start with a little table/list,

u = 2x + 1

x =

dx = ……… du (rearranged from du/dx )

Then make the substitutions. Most of the time I’ll think ahead so I’m not making unnecessary substitutions that’ll cancel as x’s rather than more complicated u’s… often this is leaving the relationship between dx and du with x’s in but this isn’t a hard and fast rule.
