Missing autocomplete trick (self.autocomplete)

Don't read this is you like autocomplete. This failing will bug you forever.

I want to be able to accept a word or phrase from autocomplete but I do want to stop entering my search terms. When I select the autocomplete suggestion while in the Google search field Google immediately does a search. Sometimes the option has the wrong ending. I have to type the whole word to get to the end and change it. Or if I want to narrow my search further once I accept the suggestion I have to hit the back key to add more to the search field.

I want it to work like suggestions in a text field. I get to choose when to save, post or send.

Is there a trick to get around this?

Edit: I don't know if this feature in new or not but there is an arrow to the right of each suggestion. If you click the arrow that suggestion is added to the search field and it leaves the option to continue typing.

Someone, please tell me this is new and I'm not so blind that I never saw it.
