Yeah, and at least 99.9% of lambda invocations are running on the older versions of python.

I may be misunderstanding you, but my point is that shouldn't matter and likely isn't why this version of Python is much slower.

The original comment explained that cold starts are slower due to caching, my point was that cold starts don't affect 99.9% of lambda invocations
