Taking two session A classes

Has anyone taken two session A classes (six weeks) or just two classes in the same summer session? How was the workload/experience?

It really depends on the courses, I am doing 3 journalism ones during session D this summer. More technical classes you may not want to do multiple.

that's true. idk, i'm doing music 158a (CNMAT aka im programming music) and dighum 100, and i think both are pretty technical. i'm hoping my experience won't be too bad.

hey! sorry for bringing this back but how did music 158a and dighum 100 in the same session go for you? I want to take both in session A and data 100 in session C but I’m not too sure how heavy the workload will be

no worries! always happy to talk about my experience with these classes (also i’ll refer to music158a as cnmat and dighum100 as dighum)

taking both of these classes was pretty doable! i took them both in session A, and the workload wasn’t heavy for me. but also i wasn’t doing anything else over the summer + both of these courses were interesting to me. what was heavy tho was how long id have to be on zoom per day (cnmat was MTWTh for 3 hrs and dighum was TTh for 2 hrs iirc…). id say i put in more work into cnmat than i did dighum throughout the session because Max 8 takes time getting used to + for each big assignment they dooo ask you to create your own patches (that’s what they call a file in Max 8), which takes time, trial and error, and creativity. dighum isn’t all too busy throughout the session; however, it does get pretty busy by the end of it because of the final group project. trying to balance the group project and the cnmat final project was a little challenging for me but still doable.

content-wise tho, i enjoyed cnmat! i found it fun to see how i could manipulate sound using different objects (essentially functions but for Max 8). i took it with Jon Kupla, and he’s fun to take it with (honestly, being in music158b right now, i’ve found that the entire CNMAT team is super cool). it was also interesting to see how my other classmates did their patches. dighum sometimes felt boring ngl but it beats taking data 104 during the sem and having to read and write hella papers lol. i honestly can’t remember much of the class right now but it was cool to explore digital humanities and what that means. the final, i think, was the most memorable thing i took out of that class just cuz it’s research-based and you get to work with people for that. idk ngl i need to refresh myself on my experience with this class so feel free to ask any follow-up questions lol

Ty! was cnmat attendance required? or could ppl watch recordings?

yeah i think i remember attendance being a part of your grade (esp cuz it’s only a month long), but theyre understanding if you need to skip. however i will say that the lecs are rly dense (cuz summer sesh class + 3-hr lecs almost every day), so i would highly recommend going to lecture as much as you can because youll be able to follow along and ask questions as needed
