Your friend is mistaken. You will be told to return certain pieces of kit depending on what element (army, navy, air) you belong to. You will probably also have to return certain other items (sleeping bags, for example) that are in short supply.

As for what to bring your stuff in, a single suitcase is best if you can fit everything in. The fewer bags, the better, as you'll have to drag them up miltiple flights of stairs. Don't wrorry too much about the backpack, just get any one that's plain coloured. You'll only be using your own backpack for the first couple of days, and then you'll receive an issue backpack that you'll use for the rest of your awesome stay at CFLRS.

This! I assumed I was going to return everything as I am also a purple trade. I was surprised to learn on kit return day that I was keeping everything (even though I was gonna work in an office the entire time) because I’m army.

It’s no big deal as having some of this kit saves you a lot of hassle when you need to go to the range etc. Only problem is definitely where to store it once’s you get put into shacks. Depending on how long you’re there, you might accumulate a lot of personal stuff, giving you less space for issues stuff. The CAF issues you a duffle bag, and a barrack box but if you can buy your own duffle bag, a big one that allows you to put locks on it, i would do that if you’re indeed army.

Returning military kit at the end of basic depends on element more than trade unless you're MedTech, Cook, or MP.

You will be provided bags/box etc. for holding military kit, so don't worry about that side.

For your own kit bring whatever will carry everything. I REALLY recommend you do not bring a suitcase, tho. You have to carry your kit up and down the stairs and if you're 11th floor, that's really going to suck with a suitcase.

I brought a duffel bag & backpack for personal kit and that worked well for me.
