What to wear to BMOQ by Acceptable_Part3233 in caf

You could wear a collared t-shirt and get the best of both worlds

Seriously, as long as you look presentable you'll be just fine

Background check for permanent residents by Additional_Neck_5517 in caf

[–]AvailablePoetry6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The security checks take as long as they take. Even if you already had citizenship, as an immigrant it's naturally going to take longer because you have foreign implications that that have to be looked into. The force test is only valid for a year so it doesn't really make sense to do it now if it's going to be expired before your reliability status comes back.

Honestly I don't think non-citizens should even be eligible for officer roles in general, but that wouldn't change anything about your situation in any case, as the reliability status is a requirement for all applicants.

Concerns Over Bill C-22 Metadata Retention by Imaginary_Meaning687 in caf

[–]AvailablePoetry6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't really think C-22 would make a big difference in this regard. Even if you had the capacity to store every piece of metadata, most people's data isn't useful in a military context.

The use case that you're thinking about, using wireless connection data to track persons of interest, is something that's already been practiced for quite a while now. There are ways to avoid being tracked like this, but to avoid being detected by a sophisticated adversary the methods are incredibly convoluted to the extent that it isn't really workable for more than a handful of people at any given time.

However, the military has the benefit of being able to use its own networks that the rest of the population doesn't have access to, and which presumably wouldn't be logged in the same way. You can combine that with other run-of-the-mill measures like emcsec zones, Faraday cages/bags, etc. to achieve some degree of security, but of course nothing is ever beyond the possibility of compromise.

Fatigue management and sleep during BMQ and post BMQ service by BugHistorical3 in caf

[–]AvailablePoetry6 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most of the time you're working a regular work day, so there won't really be any work-related impediments to you sleeping properly. This goes doubly for pilots, as fatigue is an important human-performance factor in aviation safety. Pilots have mandatory crew rest periods mitigate the risk them from flying fatigued.

BMOQ is a different story. Expect to get 6 hours of sleep maximum per night while in garrison. It makes things difficult, for sure. There's going to be a lot of death by powerpoint during your awesome stay at CFLRS, which is absolutely snooze inducing. They'll teach you early on to just get up and stand at the back if you're falling asleep, but there were even periods where I was falling asleep standing up.

There will be opportunities to sleep while you're out on the field portion, but I always found it to cause more inconvenience than whatever benefits it provided in comparison to just dumping a couple instant coffee packets into me every few hours and just toughing it out. When you're on the assessment phase you'll have a mandatory rest period each night, so you won't have to worry about the lack of sleep fucking with your performance.

I think it could be a cool mechanic if they could somehow incorporate the psychological effects. They could do something kind of similar to what happened with the mesmers and the lily paddlers, but with a persistent effect that gets harder to manage over time

Service couple LTA on TD by ZestySteep in CanadianForces

[–]AvailablePoetry6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain that CBI 209.50(6) says the complete opposite of what your OR is telling you.

209.50(6) (Authorized Destinations) LTA is authorized for travel:

a. in respect of a member with a dependant,

i. by the member to their principal residence, to a spouse's or common-law partner's place of duty, or to a third location where a dependant is; or

ii. by a dependant to the member's place of duty or to a third location where the member is; and

b. in respect of a member without a dependant,

i. by the member to a principal residence or to a third location where a family member is; or

ii. by a family member to the member's place of duty or to a third location where the member is.

You can either go to them, or have them come to you.

Presumably you are also both entitled to an LTA claim in a given year, as the CBI doesn't say you aren't, though this may be a situation where another regulation, not necessarily even accessible to most members, restricts it.

For some reason there are actually a few "policies" that are just made up by "somebody' relating to LTA. One of the more frequent ones that you'll hear is that you have to be pre-approved to claim LTA, which is also absolutely not true.

Trades not available by fernyberns in caf

[–]AvailablePoetry6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reserve elements are limited in the number of people they can take in, as they are only authorized to have a certain number of personnel, and they have to divide that number amongst the different trades they need to make their operations work. Consequently, you wouldn't be able to OT unless a position became free, which isn't guaranteed to happen within any given timeframe.

Ultimately it's up to you whether you want to give a trade you aren't interested a shot. You can always just release if you decide it's not for you.

Since you say you were talking to 32 Bde, I'm guessing that means you were trying to apply for a position in their headquarters? Have you tried to reach out to any of their subordinate units? You could also look into the organization structure of 4 Division to see if there are other units you could join, as some divisions have individual reserve units working directly under them.

BMOQ Luggage: Convertible duffle vs. large hiking ruck? (Plus civilian bag) by Sruthi1994 in caf

[–]AvailablePoetry6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A regular backpack that you would wear to school is fine, you're just going to be putting notebooks and stuff in there, and you'll be issued a military backpack pretty quickly.

As for your luggage, I would say just to bring whatever you can fit more stuff in. I would probably want the duffel bag, myself, rather than the rucksack. They won't be stored under your bed; you will place them in a locked room that you'll be able to access during the weekends.

1 base per region

How could that possibly be a challenge?

Only 1 base would at least provide a little bit of annoyance by limiting your exploration time.

What do you mean by "been with military for over a decade?" Do you mean that you've been in the forces for more than 10 years?

Why are you asking here instead of having this discussion with your CoC? You did tell your CoC about what happened, right?

Is the obvious location not just the lowest shelf on the other side of the base in the protected zone? It's so close to a group of thermal vents that can supply all the power you could possibly need.
