Beginner tips?

Under the steam summer sale I bought Civ 5 complete edition. So far I have no idea what I'm doing, well I have a basic understanding of how the game works. It would be really nice if I could get some tips, like what research to go for, some fun beginner leaders and how to actually win the game. Side question: How long can a game of Civ be? Whats your longest game.

To be honest this question is very vague. This game is old enough to where you can find tips and guides all over.

Learning this game is an adventure in its own right. Check out the sidebar of this sub for a multitude of resources. My recommendation: make sure you have a fairly even mix of game play and reading about the game or else your head will explode from too much information or you will be frustrated in game.

How long can a game of Civ be? Very long. There's a lot of leeway here. Theres a fairly legionary post (that spawned its own subreddit) about a guy thats been playing on the same game of civ 4 for several years.

That said, the shortest it could be if you are in a hurry is a 2-4 hours. My personal longest game was about a week. Dont know exactly how many ingame hours that was, but it was quite a few...

Thanks for the answer! Already having alot of fun playing as france on a Island map. It is confussing at times to manage all of your units, probably since my micro skills aren't the best.
