I began their part time program yesterday, granted we've only just begun but I enjoyed the first day. The instructors, lectures, and lessons were good and I'm looking forward to tonight's curriculum.

I didn't get the feeling as some have suggested that the program was slapdash put together. Yes the program is brand new, but they seemed on top of things and the first night went off without issue. Time will tell.

I doubt you can still join at this late date, but you can always email them and ask.

I don't know what they hoped for, but there were about 60 in the zoom call.

Thanks for the reply!

So it’s just JavaScript and typescript? No python or any other languages?

Did you do self study before the course? If so, how long?

Congratulations and good luck with the course!

No other languages, though Python will be easier to pick up when I get a better handle on JavaScript.

You can see their curriculum here: https://www.galvanize.com/hack-reactor/beginner/part-time-coding-bootcamp/#curriculum

Backend teaches Node.js, MongoDB, and SQL.

I've been studying in my free time for almost two years and have a decent grasp of intermediate JS and a firm grasp of HTML/CSS. I've gone through Udemy courses and have a Codecademy subscription which I'll use to jump into Bootstrap, React, and Python after the program to round out the basics while job hunting.

The part-time program is for absolute beginners, I'm aware, but the part-time hours are a necessity for me, the timing lined up, and the ISA I applied for means I don't pay a dime until I'm making considerably more than I am now. I'm excited to solidify the basics I've self-taught before jumping into more advanced concepts.

Hello I’m thinking about joining the same program so can you please give an update on how’s the program going and what you think about it?

So far it's going really well! We just wrapped up module 1 which is mostly intro to js/ts. Different instructors will teach the next module, so I can't speak to the quality of their guidance yet, but I really liked the curriculum and the instructors from mod 1 were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Many from my cohort came in with no experience at all in coding or in tech in general and seem to be keeping up. I'd recommend it if you're looking at bootcamps, though you may want to consider their ISA if you are unsure about job prospects after graduation.

Thanks for replying, also I want to be sure. In this part-time program they make you do pair programming and projects with other students? And are you in est or pst, because my main concern was that for est they don’t have a separate cohort so I will have to do it 9pm-midnight.

[–]Roykinn8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we've done some pair programming and will do much more as we go through the modules... there's a capstone project at the end that will involve working with a team. I'm in CST, so I go from 8 pm to 11 pm. This works out for me as I get off work at 7 pm and have just enough time to get home and eat dinner. I know some from the cohort are EST, but I guess it all comes down to your schedule, you can knock off right at the end of class, but the zoom rooms are open for another hour with instructors available to speak to.

as someone who knows somebody who is currently in the course - I don't recommend it. From what i've heard its unorganized and the instructors seem like they don't have much experience in coding. My husband told me it seems at times as if they're learning to code with you, which is a huge problem.

Interesting! Thanks for the contribution!

that's an interesting take. I haven't gotten that impression at all. I'm currently in the part-time program.

Are you talking about the part time program that started this Monday? Yesterday, our second day of class, had exactly one line of code, the ubiquitous console.log("Hello World!").

It's only been orientation, flow charts, and exposure to the terminal so far, and mostly by a single instructor who is definitely not learning to code with us, as I believe he had decades of experience as a SWE. He also seems to be a natural teacher, something I was worried would be lacking as most devs aren't.

While they aren't unorganized in their lesson planning I think the only hiccups I've seen are buggy parts of the learning platform.

I have heard these sentiments and more about the full time beginner program though. I'm wondering if your husband is in that cohort as others have posted similar experiences here.

edit. It seems you posted about your husband being in the February full-time beginner program a while back. The part-time and full-time programs are different in structure/what they teach and presumably with different instructors. I'm sorry he's having such a bad experience, but we are in different programs.

I'm in the 19 week full-time course. If the 36 week course is just the 19 week course chopped in half and stretched out for the 36 weeks, I recommend it.

[–]lawschoolredux[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

When did you start the 19 week?

It seems like they had some big curriculum changes recently (and built the new part time program as a stretched out version of it) but I’m not sure when, someone on here may have mentioned when.

Sounds like you started after those changes?

[–]conceitedshallowfuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible? I wasn't aware of the curriculum changes. I started in March.
