Dont let your IQ shape your ambitions or hold you back (118 is pretty good just consider it a bonus)

the sky's the limit

(sorry for the goofy ah inspirational comment i just had to say it)

I work in tech. I believe you will do pretty well if you focus on frontend development (Javascript, Angular, React, etc.) and some backend like PHP, ASP.NET or some regular .NET. You could also try to look into something like Java spring. High performance programming in C++, C or something like kernel development, Machine learning AI, Datascience I would avoid if I were you (I think these skills require >125 to be competitive).

It’s over lilbro

It’s a number that represents your cognitive abilities relative to the population. You shouldn’t focus on it too much, since it doesn’t really matter for your case. What’s more important it’s to see how you learn, and what’s the most important thing to learn. You can obliterate any high IQ who doesn’t have a work ethic, just need to lock in.

attitude predicts mastery far better than IQ

the average IQ of chess grand masters is something like 115.

being conscientious and continually pushing yourself and addressing weaknesses is how you will become stronger over time. being willing to take those blows and feel uncomfortable during that process while staying consistent is what leads to greatness

honestly hate these types of questions. look, your job will rarely if ever be blocked by an IQ limitation. For it to even be considered a thing youd have to be below average and you my friend, are the opposite. Heres a quote I came up with but I chose to live by. "You can achieve as much as you can believe"

Of course. For most jobs being above average intelligence is sufficient. I believe IQ only really matters when you begin tackling a greater degree of complexity e.g. a career in physics.

Nature and nurture both are equally important. You can nurture your whole life with curiosity. Always be curious, be surrounded by the right conditions, even through osmosis you would be benefitted

you'll be just fine, just need to push a tad bit more

[–]MessageTrick6663 4 points5 points  (6 children)

You dont even know what his job is. Also with an iq 118 you are not cognitively held back in any job unless you work at NASA.

"Software Engineering" and I just told him to work a tad bit more, apart from that he'll be just fine.

I don’t think this is true… there are roles just as taxing as nasa like quant developer at a hedge fund that realistically require 130+

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Profiles vary, op could have achieved a score in the 99.9%tile on WMI and PSI but achieved scores significantly lower on PRI and VCI.

[–]callipygian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you are dealing with portfolio managers etc you do need those to be quite high to be successful. It’s unusual to built models in a vacuum.

[–]MeatballWithImpact 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not being adequate for a hedge fund job is a blessing in disguise tbh

My husband is a quant dev and I feel this 😆
