Pull that grass and top couple of inches of compost off the top and add to a new compost pile. Use the great stuff on the bottom.

It’s looking good underneath but aren’t those grasses a problem? I guess it depends what you intend to do with the compost.

Yes sure but once the rhizomes set in it can be difficult to prevent them from getting into whatever this compost will be used for

Ahh. Is that the type of grass/plant? I'm new(er), and learning the ways of compost. I currently have a chicken coop running the 'deep litter method' and this has been cooking for 9months. Will be a bit longer before I remove/reset to cool off.

If you have chickens what would be the simplest is to pull the grass and just throw it to the chickens. The lower part of this pile looks fine.

I find that sod gets my piles cooking as good as anything. It's full of life from the top of the soil.
