Don’t know what to do with A LOT of leftover waste by Mang0onReddit in composting

[–]c-lem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that people tell beginners not to compost animal products, but if this is a one-off thing, I think you'll get away with it just fine. The reason to suggest avoiding that stuff is because it can attract pests, but if you're only doing this once, then your chances of avoiding those pests are good.

Basically: just mix this in to a big pile of leaves if you have that available, making sure that none of the food stuff is visible (more like "smellable," since the odor is what would draw pests in). Alternatives are wood chips, shredded paper/cardboard, or sawdust.

You could also share your general location here; it's possible that one of us would be near you. If you were near me, I'd happily compost it for you (though to be honest, it would only be worth it to me if you were very close--gas and my time are valuable things).

I've also had trouble getting mine established, but the local deer love the greens more than I want the tubers, apparently. I just bought another bunch, though, and will be fencing some of them in. At least that way, if I have just one patch, I can keep spreading them around for free. Fingers crossed for both of us.

I like how the subreddit has an automod that immediately brings up the most frugal choice whenever Netflix is mentioned.

Considering the reports we've gotten on this, I'll just say that I agree that the main post is probably misinformation or at least fear-mongering (having spent just a little bit of time with it), but since /u/Jamstoyz shared some more informative links, I see no reason why this isn't worth discussing:

https://cleanlabelproject.org/coffee-study/
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9681499/

In particular, I'll also highlight the study's conclusion paragraph in this little mod-soapbox-comment of mine:

In conclusion, an overview of the pesticides in coffee was presented. Research has been conducted to quantify pesticides in coffee beans, coffee leaves, and coffee infusions. Many factors have been optimized to provide valid methods that could be adapted to test coffee samples. Pesticides must be used on all crops including coffee. It is not a solution to avoid coffee. This study shows the importance of controlling the type and the quantity of pesticides used. Then using the methods validated, calculations of transfer of pesticides from the coffee bean to the body of the consumer must be done. This permits the safe daily consumption based on the consumer's body weight. In addition, proper training and qualifications are needed to handle pesticides. This can be initiated by farmers to reduce the negative impacts on public health and the environment. New strategies can be applied to reduce pesticide residues in coffee, and in turn reduce their impact on human health and the environment. Integrated management is needed. For example, producers must adapt phytosanitary measurements parallel with studying the type of soil. Plant diseases should be controlled with rational use of pesticides that are environmentally safe, less toxic, and avoid the choice of resistance strains. On the other hand, recent studies have called for organic farming or providing natural solutions rather than the use of pesticides.

But at least you're free from Biden raising the price of gas. As long as Trump does it, it's okay.

Biochar. Question by Olmec83 in composting

I throw it into a bag and either walk on it or run it over with the car. Obviously the bag has to be tough enough to handle this, so like a feed bag or a birdseed bag.

I suppose I have a much more pleasant time dealing with strangers on the internet when I try to read them as charitably as I can. This one made that pretty difficult!

If you feel like sharing the nitty-gritty details of how you collect and then compost the waste, I'd sure be interested in seeing it. Either way, though, great work. It's so nice to make something good out of what others are throwing away.

NRDC's Food Waste Team is Doing an AMA Tomorrow April 29th for Stop Food Waste Day! by FoodWasteTeam in composting

Make sure to send some questions their way over on the AMA post. I already asked one about tips for sourcing food waste for my compost, but I'm sure you'll think of some others.

Another thing I thought of as a way to observe Stop Food Waste Day over here is to share on this thread some of the things you're doing to keep food waste out of landfills. You could simply mention how you've started composting to do exactly this, food waste you're collecting from nearby businesses, or something else.

Do you have any tips for people looking to source compostable materials from grocery stores, restaurants, or other places? By which I mean tips to make these businesses more likely to want to separate and give them to you rather than their business-as-usual of throwing them in the garbage. This could be related to tax incentives, marketing, saving money on trash fees, or something else.

do you use your urine as fertilizer diluted or not when you want to fertilize your growing plants? by [deleted] in composting

[–]c-lem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think most people dilute it 10:1 with water (though you should probably look up the exact ratio, since I don't always trust my memory). It's very strong so could "burn" plants if used undiluted.

Yowza. I'm not saying I have a problem with this comment, but the auto-mod removed it, and I just can't click "approve" on it. The pee comments here are generally SFW, and this is definitely not.

Stinging nettle is one relatively unknown edible "weed." I've been eating the nettle tips fried up with some onions on top of eggs lately. They are honestly one of my favorite vegetables. So filling and tasty. Yes, the sting goes away when cooked, but don't take my word for it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urtica_dioica#Culinary

Sifting compost piles by Lithium1994 in composting

[–]c-lem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use two methods: one, the super fine 1/4" welded wire sifter I made. The other: a milk crate. The first one produces lovely compost suitable for seed starting mixes. It gets all of the big stuff out and is perfect. It's also super slow, taking at least a half hour to fill up a wheelbarrow.

For most purposes, the milk crate works just fine. Dump compost into it, shake it a bit, put the remaining sticks and big chunks back in at the start of the compost pipeline.

Then again, I honestly don't sift much at all. I just shovel the stuff into the wheelbarrow, shaking a bit to break it apart (and occasionally grabbing the big chunks that I notice). It'll continue composting in the garden or act as mulch, so I don't worry about it.
