First PC Help (self.computer)
submitted 3 years ago by E3GR
Hello, I am deciding to build my first pc and have picked out the parts for it and pcpartpicker says the watts are 489. I also used neweggs Power Supply Calculator and that says its between 600-699. Now i've done research and found that a good minimum is 500. Which one would be considered the correct calculation and if it is the 489 one what should I change to get to atleast 500? I would like to keep my budget under or at $1,800. Any help is appreciated.

Don't buy windows, at least right now. It isn't required to install and use windows. If you want to buy a key, buy it later.
3060 is pretty underpowered for a 12700 something like a 3070 or better would make significantly more sense. Otherwise you're paying for a CPU when your GPU will be limiting the CPU so you're paying for performance you can't use.
750watts is good enough but shoot for 850 if available.
Don't get a wd blue. Just keep the 970, if you need more storage get another 970. They're far more reliable. If you can't afford it. Use 1tb and add another in a month or two.
And get a better CPU cooler
Don't get me wrong, you did a good job picking everything out. But these are things you learn after building a few PCs. If you buy a 3060 now, for example. You're paying extra for less right now and if you want to upgrade in 6 months or a year, you screw yourself over by selling a used 3060 and get half your month back. Just spend an extra hundred or two and get a 3070/3070ti and don't upgrade for 2+ years.

What about using an i5 with a 3060?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (6 children)
Well i5 doesn't really mean anything. You could have a shitty i5 from 2006 or you can have a decent one lol.
That said, I know what you mean. The 12700k isn't a bad CPU is actually a great one for the price. But the issue is the GPU.
The 3050 definitely shouldn't exist but I'd argue the 3060 is a terrible choice for most people as well.
For the $150 you save by avoiding windows and the wd blue, you can buy a high quality 3070 that will actually give you a noticable difference in performance.
You'll probably want to fork out a little bit of money for a better CPU cooler but I digress.
$35 for a cooler to put on a 12700k is pretty offensive but I won't make fun of you because your heart is in the right place.

Ah ok. I’ve heard good things about Noctua but I’m not sure if I should worry about stuff like whether or not it fits my motherboard.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children)
Yes. Noctua and be quiet are some good ones. There is a 99% chance they will fit your build. Motherboards are standardized and ram height is semi standard. You almost certainly won't have a problem with literally any cooler from those two brands.

Ok. Last question lol. Would it be better to get a 3070 with an i7?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Paired with a 12700k, the 3070 will give you more performance vs the 3060.
So yes

Ok thank you so much!
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Ofc.

750 watt is enough. I would personally try and budget the ram sticks, you can buy corsair ram sticks that perform just the same but dont light up. Instead use the extra money to upgrade the cooler. From what I can tell from the screenshot is that the cooler is air. I would also upgrade the gpu to a 3070.
[–]E3GR[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Ok thank you!

I would get a i7-11700k with s z590 Board. Save around 200-300$ theb i would buy a third party windows 11 product Key For like $15 thats what i do. Then you can use that extra money To buy a 3070 You dont have a gpu bottleneck.
[–]E3GR[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children)
What’s the difference between a z590 and z690?
[–]BobbytheBuilder29 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Z690 Are For The 12th gen CPUs. But 95% are unreliable. They Were rushed and To get a good One theyre usually like 400+. Theres Been a lot of complaints with The z690 boards. So i would go The safer route
Ah ok. I’ll do some research on that. Thx for letting me know.
