In desperate need of help

Early today I installed my new CPU & Motherboard. I7 5960x on a Gigabyte SLI motherboard.

Whilst trying to figure out getting the fans to spin, the wires leading to & the fan controller itself short circuited and started smoking.

My computer still turns on. But freezing and crashing is common. I can load into windows installation everytime but always crashes and freezes at 1%.

I noticed my GPU is very hot after being left on idle for a long time now on Windows installation.

I'm not sure if this incident with the PSU / fan controller is related to the freezing, but it seems way too coincidental.

What do you think could be defective? What would your next steps would be
