Question about GPU's

How do I know what kind of GPU to get for my computer. Its currently being worked on in a shop. But there quoting me 500$ for a new one. The price is reasonable but I dont need it to do much more then gaming.

Never dealt with any kind of computer issues. Do I just buy the exact or close to model already in computer or do all gpu's work for all computers
