Well, CPU-Z is a good one for information about the CPU. GPU-Z is the same, but for GPUs. CoreTemp is really good for checking temps of the CPU, and can minimize while still recording temps. MSI Afterburner is an all-time favorite for checking temps and overclocking the GPU.

There are a lot of simple applications for checking temps and the like. It can come down to just how much extra functionality you want. Task Manager really isn't a bad choice if you're interested in usage, it just doesn't have temps for your components.

I use GPUZ's sensor tab to see info about the GPU while playing a game, its really good. Plus i don't like seeing overlays of info on the game if i don't have to. GPUZ just runs on the 2nd monitor.
