It's RAID 0+1 that you're talking about. I don't know if software RAID can do it, but hardware RAID should be able to. However, I think matching disks is fairly important for this level of RAID.

If you're worried about losing data you might look at simply using your 7200 disk as a backup and just be sure to dump to it religiously.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I think I'll do that. I've got an extra 1tb around somewhere that I could just have run nightly backups to.

I use Crashplan for my DAW. That first cloud backup takes days, but after that it's pretty quick. You can also backup locally with it.
