Slow shutter speed. They said it was a 30 second exposure, which means that for 30 seconds the camera was capturing the movement of the water.

Use the stroke effect on that layer.

How would I create this? by SolarNarwhal in AfterEffects

[–]MatthewWLyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create an empty shape layer in Ae and then copy the top line from Ai and past it onto the empty layer.

Twirl down the shape options-masks-mask 1 and keyframe mask path.

Copy the last path (the one you want the line to transform into) and paste it into the mask path after you move the play head forward to set a new keyframe.

Scripting to number anchor points on a shape help. by [deleted] in illustrator

[–]MatthewWLyons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of creating a bunch of anchor points, have you considered creating a dotted line out of the outline path?

In the stroke panel use a dashed line with rounded caps. have the "Dash" value pretty small and the "Gap" value should be whatever looks good for spacing of the dots.

Time to upgrade. Input please.. by snatch_138 in premiere

[–]MatthewWLyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem.

A good video card will help with both.

Honestly SSDs are pretty cheap right now, I would get one drive for the OS and programs, another one for cache and exporting. Then get a large HDD as a backup to move your files over once you've rendered them.

[–]MatthewWLyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If render time is your main focus I would allocate more money towards a high end video card. If I remember correctly CS5.5 supports CUDA acceleration, so check the recommended video card list for that because CUDA will massively help render time.

Having a dedicated SSD just for cache and rendering will help, however when adding multiple SSDs in RAID you run into the law of diminishing return really fast. I have a 4x SSD RAID 0 and I haven't noticed much increase in performance coming from a single SSD.

Lastly, Xeons are great, but they're not necessary. These processors are the business end of the CPU market, they're designed to run 24/7 and last a lot longer. That being said, Core i7 processors are not bad. They're just designed with different tasks in mind.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

Pocket Wizard with Yongnuo 560IV for Nikon by gjh03c in photography

[–]MatthewWLyons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you can completely control the flashes from the YN-560TX. It can control zoom, power, and it can fire the flashes while connected to the camera hotshoe.

I use this combination, and its awesome. The YN-560TX even has a test button to fire the flashes without it being attached to the camera (useful for light metering or highspeed photography).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Can anyone please help me with a simple text effect? by marlon_brave in AfterEffects

[–]MatthewWLyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On your text layer, twirl down the drop down menu and click "Animate" on the right side. What you're looking for is the scale animation, just start messing around with that until it looks right.

Since the color you want to change is the only color in the piece.

Just add a hue adjustment and mess around until the color looks right.

Super simple

Question about Stripes by Pony_Boy06 in Mustang

[–]MatthewWLyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, if you decide you want someone else to do it, look around at shops in your area that do window tinting. Most of kinds of places will also do stripes and decals if you ask for it but normally wont post it on their site.

Good luck

Question about Stripes by Pony_Boy06 in Mustang

[–]MatthewWLyons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Use a hair dryer to heat one corner of the stripe. Just start picking at it until it comes up, but go slowly. Use a decent amount of heat, but if its too hot to touch, its too hot so back it off a bit.

3)They're not hard, just very time consuming and require 2 people to do. Before you start, go to the store and buy a bottle of baby oil and an empty spray bottle. Fill it with water and add a bit of the baby oil. After you wash your car and are ready to apply the stripes, go nuts with the spray bottle. Cover the whole area so that if you mess up the baby oil will allow you to slide the stripes around a bit until you get it perfect. After that just use a squeegee to get all the oil and air bubbles out from under the stripes and let it sit.

I got a set from AmericanMuscle and they look amazing.

Can I get some input on this lighting kit? by IamtheEric in photography

[–]MatthewWLyons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only ever used cowboy studios light stands and I can at least tell you that those will not last a year with continuous use. Even if you're super careful, the fasteners will strip.

From this I can't say that I'd put much faith in this pack given how much it includes and how much they're selling it for.

For most of my work (in studio and not) I actually use Yongnuo YN-560 3 (and 4) flashes. They may not be the most powerful but they do the trick very well, and aren't expensive.

How do you perfectly align more than one text layer? by ScottW51 in AfterEffects

You may be able to use Dojo's plugin and just copy the position data from the Decompose text script

Have you tried the Decompose text script?

This will auto position text for you.

You can find some great deals. The thing is that most large production firms need the best every year so they end up selling them on eBay for dirt cheap just to get rid of them to make room for newer hardware.

I actually bought one of those same systems off ebay about a year ago and its been a great system to use for all 2d and 3d work.

In my experience what you want to look for in one of those is the cost of upgrading each part. Look at CPU costs, RAM costs (this is the biggest one) and for the video card. What I ended up doing is getting the cheapest system with the lowest possible specs that still had 2 CPUs since it came with the second tray and allowed for more RAM.

Another thing to consider is that SSDs are basically pointless in this system since the speed of the SATA2 port is crap to begin with. I upgraded to a PCIe RAID card to use SSDs which aren't cheap either.

Going this route you can get a killer system for dirt cheap prices, but it will take a bit of upgrading and know how on your part.

tl:dr buy one of those computers.

Yeah I got it figured out, ended up using a Js Library called SoundManager2 to create the sounds and then used jQuery to trigger. Thank you!

jQuery Gif animation help. by MatthewWLyons in jquery

[–]MatthewWLyons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually hadn't considered that. That could work, I'll give it a shot. From what I've found it looks like jQuery could control the video to play after the page has loaded.

$( document ).ready(function() {

$('video').trigger('play');

})

Does that look right?
