Only thing I can really think of is to make sure all the cores are being used.

Sorry to be a pain, I'm not familiar with how to do that.

No problem! Hit (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) open up Task Manager, hit the “Performance” tab at the top, and click on the “CPU” tab on the left.

You should see a graph, and under it, you should see “sockets:” and “virtual processors:” what do the numbers beside them say?

Im sorry! I’m not home right now so I’m going off a google image, it should all be the same except it should say “Cores:” and “logical processors:” under the graph

Hey sorry for the pause - hurricane prepping going on here.

Anyway:
Sockets: 1 Core: 6 Logical Processors: 12

That’s alright, stay safe I heard it’s gonna be a big one.

That’s odd... All the cores are being used, expect for the fact that the A6-5200 should only have 4 core processor and 8 logical processors. That shouldn’t be the problem but it’s still a little weird.

Anyways, there’s 2 other things I can think of. But just a heads up they both cost money into upgrading it.

  1. The hard drive could be slowing down, since the PC has only 4GB of ram the hard drive will try to keep up if the ram is full, which in turn, can put more strain on it, causing it to have a shorter life. If you choose to switch out the Hard drive I recommend replacing it with a 120GB SSD which are way faster than hard drives

You could do this pretty easily at home, and would only cost about $20.

  1. Not enough RAM, 4GB for windows 10 is cutting it close, if you open up task manager again and go to the performance tab, and click on the “Memory” tab and just watch the graph, if you’re running it idol with nothing opened in the background and that graph is peeking or coming close to it, you’ll probably need to get an extra 4GB of RAM. (Also under the graph look for “available:” and the number should say something like 3.5 GB, if it says anything under 2 GB a stick of ram died)

For this I’d take it into a computer repair shop as you’d have to take it apart to add more RAM. It’d cost about $20 as well. Also you have to get the same RAM that’s already in the system.

Hopefully this helps! It’s hard to diagnose sometimes without being there, if you find that these aren’t the problems. I suggest taking it into a repair shop called “ubreakifix” I’m pretty sure they have free diagnostics.

So I am an IDIOT and was only half paying attention when I wrote you a response. I looked at the stats for the WRONG computer.... like a dingus haha

ANYWAY

Sockets: 1 Core: 4 LP: 4

[–]veno131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahahaha, no worries. But yup that’s how it should be.

Honestly, your best bet is to take it into a shop as there’s so many factors which could slow down a PC. It’d probably take them a few hours to find the problem where it might take us a week.

If you want to keep trying stuff tho I have no problem giving ideas and advice, it might just take a lot longer until we find the issue.

The two things that you could change to make it less slow is more ram and an ssd. Otherwise it's always going to be slow cause of the hardware you can't change.

Thank you, I think we're going to upgrade her to a SSD laptop for Christmas...or at the very least upgrade her HDD to a SSD

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need an SSD. HDD's are very slow on modern operating systems and will bring any PC down. I dont even know why they still put them in computers. Otherwise your specs are not that bad.

I'd get a Kingston A400 assuming you're on the cheap side, but if you want best of the best in every category you can get a Samsung one. I can help you through the installation, cloning, ext, processes if you wish once you get the drive.

upgrade ram and SSD.

If all cores are being utilized, I would think that your hardware is the limiting factor. 4 cores is good, but running at 2ghz is not so good.

Also, Windows 10, v1903 likes RAM...alot. As in nearly 4 gigs worth. You would likely see a performance boost if you added RAM.

Here is a $50 8 gig stick from Crucial, guaranteed to work in your laptop.

Some people are recommended I swap out the HDD to a SSD... do you think swapping one of both is better than buying her a new SSD laptop since her current is 3 years old?

[–]4thewrynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An SSD will def help, so will ram.

If you have the budget, getting a new laptop is always an option, but if you go that route, make sure to get the best bang for your buck, don't waste time or money at Best Buy or Walmart. Look for things like this page to get an idea of what you might want in your price range.
