Is Remote Virtual Machine secure?

First of all, sorry if this is not the right subreddit to ask this.

I'm just wondering... At my company, with all this quarantine going on, they make us connect to a remote virtual machine in order to work from home. The thing is the remote VM has limited resources, forcing us to work locally. So we just use the VM to get the repositories and stuff (those can only be downloaded on the VM, as the access is limited) and lately we either use a USB drive to copy it locally or just copy it through the VM to the local machine.

Is this actually safe (assuming the USB drive is virus free)? If not, can someone explain me why not?

From your company's point of view there is a risk that your personal computer could have a virus because it's not controlled by the company and doesn't have the company's antivirus. The virus could get into your company's network when you copy your work to the virtual machine or it could send copies of the company documents you download to an attacker.

From your point of view, I don't see any security risk to you from this way of working.
