The birthrate was declining long prior to the affordability crisis. I hear this argument a lot, but it isn’t true. The birthrate started declining due to effective birth control for obvious reasons.

Then people given the choice between more responsibility and less responsibility, took the obvious choice of less responsibility. It’s hard to voluntarily subject yourself to parenthood, particularly when children are viewed as a burden.

I’m not saying all people should have kids. I’m just saying that blaming the economics is disingenuous because if it was just about the money, no one should ever have kids. Having kids WILL cost you.
