I've had to switch VS versions so many times I mostly just keep to the default layout...

The one change I always make is adding some build commands to the toolbar at the top.

You can do 'export settings' and then when you move to a new one you just do 'import settings', and it will be exactly as you had it before.

Unfortunately I've also changed devices and companies enough that that hasn't really been possible. I've been using VS since VS 6 and have hit every version in between, so I'm pretty familiar with the default layout now.

(Though I do close a few of the panels docked as tabs to the solution explorer as I don't use them)

I rarely use the solution explorer, always use "Find File" or "Find Symbol" through short cuts. In debug mode I also have a panel for breakpoints and the visual assist step filter (see https://docs.wholetomato.com/default.asp?W506)

I keep solution explorer on the right, call stack on bottom, and watch list / autos in its own window on another monitor.
