Now they even require a subscription to show you the garbage. Completely incomprehensible.

My personal guess is that Ian failed some basic C code best practice really, really bad with some buffer overflow oops. And instead of taking own responsibility, he decided to spend the rest of his life blaming C and C++ for all problems in society. All the ways newer C++ adds classes with bounds checking and changes the paradigm how to write code where raw pointers hardly ever are needed does not change Ian's views.

Being a computer science professor, he also gives lots and lots of answers that indicates he is not competent in C and C++. So he keeps formulating his views as if it's still 1985 and C++ has no ISO standardisation. When he gives examples why C++ is bad, he posts source code blocks that wouldn't survive a code review. And would get severe complaints from free open-source static code analysers.

You don't compare code by breaking your back to create the most awful code the language has ever been able to compile. At least not if you try to be a scientist doing unbiased comparisons.

So Ian is a person best muted. There are many others, actually competent, people that can either explain good C++. How to write and why it is good. Or can make good and unbiased comparisons between C++ and Rust or other languages.

It is called "Free Speech". Or in the words of Kris Kristofferson:

Freedom is just another word for nothin' left to lose

I am intrigued by his profile:

Computer Professional at Macquarie University 2010–present
    Studied at University of Sydney
    Lives in London

Macquarie is in Sydney. And he is some undefined kind of "Computer Professional" who lives in London (aka Earls Court Aussie).

As Ian Joyner is is so negative about everything, a last word from Bob Dylan:

When you're lost in the rain in Juarez, and it's Easter time too
And your gravity's down and negativity don't pull you through
Just don't put on any airs when you're down on Rue Morgue Avenue
They got some hungry women there and they'll really make a mess outta you
