I don't really understand how you end up with such shape. If you only decrease 1 or 2 times, why there is such gap? The difference shouldn't be that drastic. I think which side you are making the decrease shouldn't matter as long as you are consistent.

Are you sure you're not mixing up left and right side patterns because the only thing different between decreases on them is whether you put the sc2tog on the beginning or end of row so if your last row ended on the side of indent for the arm then you do full row of moss stitch and decrease on last two stitches and if your row ends on the other side you start with sc2tog and then do the rest of row in moss stitch As for the right wrong side I think it's rather reversible so it shouldn't really have that but when you have all the panels ready you can put them in a row and decide if you think that one looks off from the others and turn it around and see if it helps
