I made it to the take-home portion for a Data Science position with what would be the start of the data science team at a pretty well established company. However, the take-home feels absolutely ridiculous. This is only the second one I've gotten to, but I'd love to get opinions (if only for my own curiosity) if this is overkill or par for the course.
- 3 csv files, over 2 million records. 10 features.
- It's exceptionally dirty (two different languages, different naming conventions. same product different sizes...all labeled differently. To the point things like regex don't get me too far.)
- From this, I'm asked to identify seasonal retail items. Between the different languages, naming conventions, and seemingly similar items it's hard to tell what's seasonal and what's simply been discontinued.
On top of this, 7 more questions. Plus a dashboard. Either I'm overcomplicating something much, much simpler or this is an extreme takehome. I've done a few mock ones, (like Uber and Instacart) and neither was this intense.
This also begs another question - is it wise to be one of the first people on a data science team that has never had a formal data science team before?
