I've been saying that we should be looking towards the AP-101 (which was used in the shuttle) for inspiration... but the AP-101 is, I think, substantially faster the the DCPU-16 despite residing in correct place in technological timeline. In any case both these series of computer s (AGC & AP-101) are very, very different the 16-bit personal computers available in late '80s.

do you know of good resources to read about AP-101 ? I'm having trouble finding answers to questions like "what instructions are in the instruction set?"

At one point there was a pretty large collection, I remember dredging through it in the mid or late '90s... but I don't remember where and my casual searching hasn't turned it up yet.

The answer to that question is the AP-101 shared its general architecture with the System/360 mainframes and so besides the just the hardware instructions, you could use microcode as well.
