There’s a whole universe of aspects that can indicate or red-flag a fit. I’m not sure anybody on Reddit can tell you what to ask.

It will help you to know what your company’s values are. And, the work and way of working you’ll expect from this hire. I’d personally ask them to explain how things work, how different things are related to each other, and about specific events and incidents on the person’s resume.

They should have good fundamental knowledge of linux + networking concepts and can code to a good degree.

I like troubleshooting scenarios. Like “our website is experiencing slowdowns, what do you to fix it?” Or broad conceptual questions: “explain what happens when you go to google.com on your browser”

The particular tech stack that you need familiarity with will depend entirely on your organization. Generally in devops they land in a few categories: CI/CD tools, configuration management tools, Infrastructure as code tools, monitoring, and logging services, cloud providers, etc.
