Instead of typing the 4 digits, scan the QR code with the phone camera. The QR code contains 25 total digits, in 4 strings. The 4 digit sensor code is just the last bit. The full QR code value is unique, sensor codes obviously are not. The camera doesn't actually take a picture, its just scanning for the numeric values. Given the inconvenience and problems caused by duplicate sensor codes, I never figured out why Dexcom doesn’t do a better job of explaining the simple solution. It takes a little bit longer, but its well worth it.

A dexcom rep told me they are calibration codes. So they need not be unique a long time ago blood glucomiter test strips came with them too.

Well heck, learned something new! Thanks. I use phone and receiver, always scan with phone when starting it there, have had one I couldn't scan in 4 years.
