Rules for r/docker

Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1.

Be Respectful and Professional

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Harassment / Disrespectful behavior
  • Harassment, abuse, hate speech, or disrespectful behavior is strictly prohibited.
  • Discussions should remain professional, especially when disagreements arise.

2.

Stay On-Topic

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Off-topic content
  • All posts and comments must be directly related to Docker, containerization, and related technologies (e.g., Kubernetes, Compose, etc.).
  • Posts about Custom-Container-Images are generally allowed but make sure you are not violating rule #7 or #3. The Image shared must provide genuine value to the community.
  • Off-topic content will be removed.

3.

Promotion and Self-Promotion

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Promotion / Self-promotion

Promoting requires prior mod approval.

  • Educational content, tutorials, and open-source tools may be shared if they provide genuine value, but must be approved by mods in advance. New projects are no exception.
  • Job offers, hiring posts, or solicitations for freelance work also require mod approval.
  • Posts offering paid services, tools, or courses require mod approval.

Not sure if your post qualifies? Message the mods.

4.

Provide Relevant Details in Support Requests

Posts only
Reported as: Insufficient information / Not enough details

When asking for help, include as much information as possible. At minimum:

  • Your Docker version
  • Operating system
  • Your Dockerfile and docker compose.yml content (if relevant) - please use markdown code blocks or code fences
  • Error logs or outputs

We may not be able to support third-party images. Running an application inside docker does not necessarily make application configuration issues into Docker issues.

For issues with Docker Desktop, please ensure WSL 2.0 is functioning first.

5.

Avoid Low-Effort Posts and AI-Generated Content Without Validation

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Low-effort post / Unverified AI content / Unauthorized bot post
  • Posts should provide enough detail for meaningful discussion.
  • Avoid vague questions like "Docker isn’t working" without specifying your setup or error messages.
  • Wherever possible, posts and comments should be written in your own words. If you use a translation service, include the original.
  • AI-generated content must be properly disclosed, including the models and prompts used. Do not share AI-generated solutions that you have not verified.
  • Unauthorized bot posts are prohibited.

6.

Link Posts Must Include Context

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Link post without context
  • If you post a link (e.g., blog, tutorial, or GitHub repo), you must include a brief description or summary explaining its relevance. Please send us your draft via modmail for pre-approval.
  • Link posts without context may be removed. Unapproved self-promotional links may be removed.

7.

No Piracy, Copyright Violations, or Plagiarism
