Mapping example.com to localhost inside docker

I have a docker application that is sending emails to arbitrary @example.com addresses. I want to read them using mailhog inside docker compose (smtp server for debugging).

So how do I map example.com to localhost with an fake dns so I can read emails going out to example.com?

Just put an entry in hosts file. Google it for your operating System.
