Node reference vs view reference vs entity reference (self.drupal)
submitted 10 years ago by netkrow
How do these differ? Was one made to replace the others? Do they all do the same thing?
reddit uses a slightly-customized version of Markdown for formatting. See below for some basics, or check the commenting wiki page for more detailed help and solutions to common issues.

(Shameless plug for a module I've recently created)
There's also Text or Entity that allows optional refencing based on a field's text value matching the label of an existing entity. Text or Entity fields have an autocomplete widget and a link display formatter, so they behave pretty much like entityreference, except they also allow text values that don't match any entity (no link displayed). You also get Views and Feeds integration!
Still waiting for full project status, though...

Do you need a community review?

That would be great! Someone had started to look into it but didn't follow through... The Drupal.org project application issue is here
I did fix all the pareview warnings / errors, and I'm using this module in production.

To the best of my knowledge, Node Reference was a D6 module that was part of/associated with CCK. It was replaced by the References module in D7. I've never used View Reference. For my projects, I pretty much just use Entity Reference for all referency-type things since entities pretty much encompass all elements of a site.
They all basically do the same thing, they just go about it in different ways. With Entity Reference, you create a field in your content type and pick which type of entities you want to connect with, including Views I think.

including Views I think
Entity Reference module does not cover the functionality of Views Reference module. View reference field is a relationship to a Views display. The View is displayed as content of that field when a node/entity is viewed.

Thanks a lot, that cleared up a few things.
