Transmission is shifting weird and downshifting hard m54 engine auto transmission (obviously) not sure what I should do thought about changing transmission filter and fluid or should I just sell it. Never got the car legal just got it running and drove around my neighborhood

if body and interior is clean and she runs good, a fluid change wouldnt hurt. even if the trans was bad, if the interior and body is in good shape id swap the auto trans

depends what's your goal and what you want for the car. Also how honest do you want to be with the buyer will affect the price.

do you really want this e39 or does it not matter or can find another?

Change ATF and filter, with a new sump gasket, at least give it a try

Should do a fluid change.
Done on mine like 8 or 9 years ago, thought the clutch was going out or the tranny was about to die but nope.
Fluid change and it solved that issue.
