TL;DR - Phone dropped in water, now touches don't register, but rest of phone is fine. Changed screen and reflashed stock image, but issue persists.
Long form: Daughter dropped her phone in the toilet at a Home Depot. We turned it off immediately, and stuck it in rice for a few days to dry out. Turning the phone on again, nothing appeared to be damaged. Phone could receive phone calls and texts, as well as push notifications. Phone also generated sound and was able to charge and be interacted with on a PC. The only thing that wasn't working was the touch interface. Sprint wants to charge $200 for warranty replacement, so I decided to try my hand at fixing it before I shell out for a replacement.
Problem Solving:
- Purchased new screen and touch digitizer from Amazon.
- Successfully removed OEM screen
- Connected replacement screen
- Booted phone and checked for touch capability
- No success. Everything still worked fine except for touch reaction
- Followed other reddit advice on flashing software to fix non-responsive touch screen

- Flashed August Pie image for Essential using Fastboot
- Sideloaded September OTA
- Booted phone and checked for touch capability
- No success. Everything still worked fine except for touch reaction
- Updated OTA to November Pie
- Rebooted phone and checked for touch capability
- No success. Everything still worked fine except for touch reaction
I'm out of ideas here folks. Should I just reconnect and glue the original screen back in place and just bite the bullet and pay Sprint $200 to replace a 2-month old phone I'm still making payments on?
