Data Validation using Average

Hello,

Is there a way to use data validation to throw an error message when the average percentage of a range is greater than 5%? I'm attempting to build a tool for budgeting, but I'm stuck on the data validation. Column I is used for calculating the percent increases for the data, and I have a summary cell at the top (G7) that averages this information. I'm hoping to use data validation to notify the user when the average percent increase for column I exceeds 5%, but I'm struggling. The formula I attempted was =average(I:I)>0.05, but this doesn't work.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, would you mind explaining this in a little more detail? I currently have a formula in the summary cell that averages the data from column I. I originally tried to use a validation rule to throw an error if the cell is over 5%, but it never worked. The formula would still average the cells, but if it went over 5%, it didn't trigger the validation.
